Champaign, Illinois, March 18, 2011 — On the same day that the iPad 2 made its long-expected debut, Spinlight Studio launched TallyTots for the iPad. And one week later, it's making an impressive run skyward on the App Store charts.
"Last night around midnight, we broke into the Top 200 at 197," says Matt Hutton, partner and creative director of Spinlight Studio, based in Champaign, Illinois. "Not long after that, we were at 186 and the numbers just kept climbing!"
By around 2 a.m. this morning, TallyTots had climbed to 171, passing Ms. PAC-MAN, two Disney apps and the venerable Green Eggs & Ham by Dr. Seuss. Within the education section, TallyTots hit the number 6 position, giving it even more momentum. And by 11:45 a.m. this morning, they had passed both Tetris and Oprah, reaching 125 on the Top 200. The company's original original iPad app, called Swapsies is also climbing its way back up the education charts.
"It's just amazing to think that a company from right here in Champaign, can go head to head with brands like Disney, Sesame Street and Marvel Comics," says Hutton. "But that's the power of the iPad."
Currently, TallyTots is selling stronger than both The Elements, and MathBoard — two apps featured in Apple's national TV spots. And last night, the company received a congratulatory email from Shannon Des Roches Rosa, whose son, Leo, was featured in a video testimonial at the iPad 2 launch. In the video, Apple showed how the iPad is helping autistic children like Leo interact more effectively with their world. Rosa called TallyTots "fantastic" and said that she plans to review it on her site in the next couple of days.
That's pretty heady stuff for the team at Spinlight. And they have no plans to stop anytime soon. According to Hutton and his two business partners, Chris Phillips and John Turner, Spinlight already has several ideas for new titles, including a children's book. "We're loving this right now," says Hutton. "And we can't wait to do a lot more."
